Man Dead in Chain Reaction Crash on Long Island

On the afternoon of Monday, May 24 in Huntington, a chain-reaction crash involving four vehicles resulted in the death of a 50-year-old Huntington man.

That man, Mark Bernzweig, was driving his 2004 Honda Accord west on the Jericho Turnpike when he struck a 2018 Lexus RX350 driven by a 51-year-old woman, also from Huntington. She was trying to turn left on to Jericho Turnpike from Werner Road.

According to Suffolk County Police, Bernzweig continued in his Honda west on Jericho Turnpike and struck a 2013 Nissan Rogue driven by a 26-year-old Huntington woman and a 2012 Nissan Versa driven by a 23-year-old Huntington woman. Both of those vehicles were stopped at the intersection of the Jericho Turnpike and Werner Road.

Upon being transported to the hospital, Bernzweig died of his injuries. Detectives investigating the case were attempting to discern if he suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel.

The woman in the Versa was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and the other drivers were not injured.

Chain reaction accident liabilities

Any time there is a chain reaction accident, investigators (and those who wish to file personal injury claims against the liable party) must determine who caused the initial accident. In some cases, the victims of the accident may not have seen all of the events that occurred—they only experienced their collision, which might have involved another vehicle that was not actually at fault for the accident.

It is important in accidents involving multiple vehicles to gather as much evidence and witness testimony as possible to get an accurate picture of the entire situation. The more information you collect, the better you will be able to prove that the defendant was indeed liable for the accident, which is necessary if you are to succeed in your case and recover compensation.
