Nassau and Suffolk Lead in Fatal Senior Driver Crashes

Last year, Nassau and Suffolk counties in New York experienced a higher number of fatal automobile crashes involving drivers aged 65 and above than any other part of the state, reflecting a statewide increase in such incidents, as reported by AAA Northeast.

In 2022, there were 214 fatal crashes among this age group in New York, the highest since 2013. Suffolk led the state with 26 fatal crashes involving seniors, followed by Nassau with 14, according to AAA Northeast’s analysis of local data. Failure to yield was identified as the primary contributing factor to fatal crashes, followed by improper lane changes, unsafe speed, distracted driving, and disregarding traffic signals.

Nationwide, AAA reported that senior driver fatal crashes in 2022 reached the highest point since 2000. AAA emphasized the importance of senior drivers embracing new vehicle technologies, such as lane-keeping assistance and adaptive cruise control, and monitoring their health for issues that may impact driving ability.

Age-Related Factors in Personal Injury Claims

A common challenge in personal injury cases involving senior drivers is overcoming preconceived notions about their ability to drive safely. Age alone does not determine a person’s competence behind the wheel, and the focus should instead be placed on the individual’s specific physical and mental condition, as well as any contributing external factors.

Insurers may attempt to attribute the accident solely to age-related factors, potentially leading to inadequate compensation for victims. A seasoned personal injury lawyer can navigate these challenges, ensuring that the full scope of the incident is considered during negotiations or in court.
