Wrong-Way Accident Results in Death of Driver on Sunken Meadow Parkway

One person died as a result of injuries sustained in a wrong-way car accident on Sunken Meadow Parkway on Long Island.

According to New York State Police, the two-car crash occurred on Friday, November 20 in Suffolk County in Smithtown at approximately 7:30 p.m. The victim was identified as a 44-year-old man from Kings Park, who was in his 2007 Mazda CX7 SUV at the time of the accident.

The wrong-way driver was in a 2008 Chevy Colorado pickup truck, a 38-year-old man from Babylon. He was treated for serious injuries at a nearby hospital.

Further investigation revealed the man in the pickup was drunk behind the wheel. He was later charged with driving while intoxicated.

Accident claims after DWI charges

In a typical personal injury claim, it is the responsibility of the claimant to prove the defendant’s liability. This becomes significantly easier when there are criminal charges and convictions involved, such as a driving while intoxicated conviction. A DWI essentially makes the perpetrator automatically liable, removing much of the burden of proof the person filing the claim would typically have.

In addition, drivers who seriously injure or kill people as a result of driving while intoxicated face significantly heftier consequences, including larger fines, license revocation and jail time.

If you have a loved one who was killed in an accident as a result of the negligence of another driver, it is important that you seek legal counsel to recover the compensation you deserve.
