Recent Motorcycle Accident Highlights Importance of Safety

A recent motorcycle accident on Long Island resulted in the death of a 27-year-old rider, highlighting the importance of safety and awareness for all drivers. The motorcyclist involved in the accident reportedly attempted to make a left-hand turn into a parking lot when he was struck by a minivan headed in the opposite direction. The driver of the minivan and his two passengers were not injured in the crash.

The following are some of the most common causes of motorcycle accidents:

  • Failing to yield: This is sometimes a problem when a driver is making a left-hand turn at an intersection and fails to think about the fact that a motorcycle could be approaching from the other direction. Motorcycles are difficult to see, especially if they are behind another, larger vehicle.
  • Inattentive driving: Cell phones, loud passengers, food and other distractions can get in the way of a driver paying full attention to the road. This can make it much more difficult for them to detect an oncoming motorcyclist.
  • Lane splitting: Some riders will move between lanes of a highway, especially when there is stop-and-go traffic. This is not advised, as other drivers likely won’t expect a motorcycle to be approaching in this way.
  • Drunk driving/riding: Whether you’re riding a motorcycle or driving a car, you should never hit the road after having too much to drink. Both drivers and riders who are under the influence have reduced reaction times and find it more difficult to avoid accidents.
